The Peregrine Falcons of Kaohsiung Returned

Jo Ann MacKenzie

Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus)  are rare birds in Taiwan.  Every winter since 2006, a pair of Peregrines has wintered in Kaohsiung City.  The smaller bird, with whiter underparts, is the male; nicknamed ‘Whitey’ by observers.   The female bird, called ‘Blackie’ because of her darker underparts, is the larger and dominant bird of the pair.  They chose a sheltered ledge of a high-rise building, 22 storeys above the street, to eat their meals, consisting mostly of Rock Pigeons (Columba livia) caught in flight.  This time, ‘Whitey’ returned first, seen on October 10, 2011, and from time to time until April 17, 2012.  ‘Blackie’ was seen just once, on Feb. 24, 2012.
